Planets & Earth Comparison

Without knowing I’d posted an article about the sun and planets, called Seeing God, my father-in-law emailed a series of photos to me – beautiful scale models of the planets and our sun which fit in beautifully with the next day’s lesson.

Official New England Spring

The event of Spring Equinox, clearly marked on calendars, changes nothing for a Minnesotan – not the weather or mindset. The snow shovel stays within handy reach, next to the back door. Warm weather shirts and shorts, still weeks, if not months from being needed, remain tucked away. It’s not that Minnesotans don’t desire Spring. They’ve simply learned to not count their bulbs before they’ve bloomed.

by Rudyard Kipling

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise…..

At the hole where he went in
Red-Eye called to Wrinkle-Skin.
Hear what little Red-Eye saith:
“Nag, come up and dance with death!”
Eye to eye and head to head,
(Keep the measure, Nag.)
This shall end when one is dead;
(At thy pleasure, Nag.)
Turn for turn and twist for twist—(Run and hide thee, Nag.)
Hah! The hooded Death has missed!
(Woe betide thee, Nag!)

Kipling - A Worthy Read

Nearly hidden behind overgrown shrubbery, was, to my 11-year-old delight, my own secret doorway. It drew me from the hot sun, into a cool entry where I’d momentarily pause, letting my eyes adjust to the darkness. Three steps forward, my foot knew to find the first step leading to my very own private hideaway – my grandparent’s attic. While everyone else toured the garden, commenting on the beauty of the heritage tomatoes, relaxing in the shade of the apple tree, or gathering armfuls of delicate, fragrant French lilacs, I was drawn to the company of Kipling, always to be found in the same corner of the bookcase I’d last tucked him away. No matter how many times I read his stories, the magic of the adventure was as good as the first. While I appreciated the beauty and companionship of my grandparent’s yard, it was a little too known, too comfortable for my adventurer’s heart drawn to distant lands – no competition for Kipling’s exotic India.

Seeing God....

Daniel is learning everything he possibly can about space – satellites, exploration, stars, planets, and constellations. We’ve scoured the public library for space science books which must contain Orion, or according to Daniel, they aren’t “worth my time reading”.

He glued foam stars to 8 1/2×11 sheets of computer paper, re-creating his favorite constellations to cover his bedroom walls. He intently studies them every day, repeating their names quietly to himself. At night, he waits for the “earth to revolve so that it will be night”, begging us to go out with him to see the stars.

Winter Classes For Men

My father-in-law sent this interesting class offering to me. If it hadn’t been for him doing the sending, I don’t think I would have ever posted this. I mean, after all, I certainly don’t know any men who would need ANY of these classes. Although, now that I think about it, 2, 4, 5, 10, 11, and 14 might be good as refreshers. Especially #5. Just this morning I announced, “thank you for saving me time later today!”. Blank stare. “I think it’s a clever suggestion that by leaving your breakfast plate on the table, you’ve telling me you don’t mind having ALL your meals served on it. How thoughtful of you….”. Wrong again. It had moved to the counter by the time I came back into the room.

Send A Yankee Card. Please.

And if you do, there are several from which you may choose, photographed by me. All half dozen, which I submitted a year or so ago, were “accepted”.

Creative Online Sites!

Sarah and I have discovered we love paper models, especially 3-D miniatures. From floral note cards and envelopes, dollhouses with furnishings, all the way to intricately designed and painstaking to build endangered animals, the internet offers a wide variety of free sites.

Here are a few of our favorites….
