Divisions and separations are most objectionable in religion. They weaken the cause of true Christianity…But before we blame people for them, we must be careful that we lay the blame where it is deserved. False doctrine and heresy are even worse than schism. If people separate themselves from teaching that is positively false and unscriptural, they ought to be praised rather than reproved. In such cases separation is a virtue and not a sin. – JC Ryle, Warnings To The Churches
When we lived in Utah, I was frequently asked, “What are you…”. It could have come across as downright rude, but instead, it was strangely familiar. Growing up in Minnesota, it was a routine question between those of European descent, a practical line of questioning speeding up the process of determining common ground. “Oh, yeah, yeah, so you’re a Swede, eh. Well, I’m Scottish myself, but a college roommate’s great-great-great-grandfather Sven came over in 1870, don’t you know….”. The next five to ten minutes would be spent playing heritage-Tetris.
The same line of questioning also served a practical purpose for my Mormon neighbors, who were curious about my religious beliefs, since my face was unfamiliar to them during their Sunday meetings.
In the spirit of answering “What are you…”, just in case you don’t already know where you fit into the various denominations of Christianity (of which Mormonism is NOT one), here’s a well-constructed quiz. No surprise to me, I rated 0% when it came to having any liberal weave to my spiritual fabric. I’m pleased to see my “Reformed” came through loud and strong, but take issue with the category, “Reformed Evangelical”.
My “Reformed” is solidly based on centuries-old theology and not after the feel-goodism of modern Evangelicals. (Col 2:8). Better, and more accurate, for “Evangelical” to have its own category below “Reformed”.
I think that just pushed me to 110% Reformed.
