"Meteorknowledgist" or Fear Monger?

Winter LabelSay “Minnesota”, and I think “weather”. And even though I haven’t lived there for almost 20 years, weather is still the filter through which memories flow. The Minnesota Historical Society’s homage, Weather Permitting sounds like it would be an interesting exhibit, documenting Minnesota’s weather challenges over the years.

Minnesotans tend to be obsessed about the weather forecasts …insatiable need to stay on top of weather conditions. Viewers have remained glued to their screens as the science of forecasting has evolved…backed by the science of Doppler radar. Minnesota Historical Society

Then again, “obsessed about weather forecasts”? That’s not the Minnesota I knew.

That’s not to say Minnesotans aren’t obsessed with weather. They are. Without diligently focusing on All Things Weather, life was more difficult. But the ability to read the signs of weather, and to be prepared and cautious were taught by ancestors long before the advent of commercialized weather.

The result of climatology branding – the creating of a product that “scientists” market, has turned into a circus of self-promotion with a political agenda. If I designed a slogan for climatology, it would be, “Weather Information You Can’t Live Without”, as a pervasive, detrimental attitude which NASA, NOAA, AMA, and all the rest of the gang promote, having more in common with fear mongering and fault-finding, than ethical science.

Little by little, there are some scientists speaking out. But time will tell if the new administration will encourage or discourage their view. Some people to be commended include:

As a scientist and life-long liberal Democrat, I find the constant regurgitation of the anecdotal, fear mongering clap-trap about human-caused global warming (the Levi, Borgerson article of 9/24/08) to be a disservice to science, to your readers, and to the quality of the political dialogue leading up to the election. The overwhelming weight of scientific evidence shows that the Gore-IPCC theory that human activity is causing global warming is false. Being of European descent means carrying a world of guilt on your shoulders. Slavery, the decimation of the indigenous people of the New World. And in more modern times, the industrial sweatshops of the late 1800’s and now global warming. CO2 Skeptics Blog

If you thought electing Obama would wipe the slate clean have I got some bad news for you. Get ready to add one more thing to the list. In this report from mongabay.com we learn that white people caused the little ice age. American Thinker – Anthropogenic Global Warming

The man-made shift, skewing perceptions from weather-as-natural occurrence, to weather as man-made-phenomenon, shifts climatology’s focus from the well-being of humans, to blaming humans – anthropogenic bias for today’s climate and environmental conditions.

CNN Meteorologist Chad Myers had never bought into the notion that man can alter the climate and the Vegas snowstorm didn’t impact his opinion. Myers, an American Meteorological Society certified meteorologist, explained on CNN’s Dec. 18 “Lou Dobbs Tonight” that the whole idea is arrogant and mankind was in danger of dying from other natural events more so than global warming. CNN Meteorologist: Manmade Global Warming Theory ‘Arrogant’

Flashing Weather Gif Weather forecasters evolved into the nags our mothers never were. Instead of knowing and maintaining their place – early morning, noon, early-evening and late-night news – they forced themselves, an uninvited guest, interrupting regularly-scheduled television programs, inserting perpetually-flashing weather-graphics into the lower right-hand corner of the TV screen: -10F constantly -10F reminding us -10F there was no -10F escaping -10F the reality -10F of where -10F we lived.

Weather Radar The hyper-focusing affected everyone, the equivalent of always being in a High Danger! alert. We were one Doppler event away from death, our very life dependent on the constant monitoring of our vitals – “high pressure”, “low pressure”, “arctic air mass”, “Canadian ridge”, “dew point”, “humidity level”, “wind chill” – shifting our notions of “weather” to that of “climate”, and naturally-occurring weather cycles to man-made disasters for which we were blamed.

Weather used to be what happened when you crawled out of a nice warm bed, gave the window shade a quick snap, only to discover the window blocked on the outside by a snowdrift. There was no cause for panic, but instead, this “event” was useful information: you needed to leave earlier than planned, and there would be shoveling involved.

Climate is what happens when a Climatologist – a trained professional, so please don’t try this at home, folks – presents minute-by-minute events bearing down on you like a runaway train that is going to annihilate you.

There are numerous terms that those of us in the weather community use that can sometimes be confusing to those who have not studied meteorology. It is important that forecasters can effectively communicate with the general public about important weather related issues. To make this goal successful the weather community must strive to inform the public about important weather issues and citizens must be willing to learn about meteorological topics. If, in fact, Minnesotans are now obsessed with weather reports, it is a result of brainwashing, by those in the profession who have an overinflated view of their need to instruct and inform those too unintelligent to think for themselves. It’s one thing to warn people of life-threatening danger – that of tornadoes, hurricanes or in the case here in Minnesota or New Hampshire, blizzards and ice storms that can wipe out power to hundreds of thousands of homes – their warnings serving as a great public service, for which I am very grateful.

But to take weather to the pitch and fury it is today, making every twitch of the Doppler radar into a obsessive-compulsive event is just plain wrong.

I am feeling a need to continue grousing like my grandfather, someone I’m only now seeing as a “visionary” who was irritated at the climatology mass-marketers a couple decades ago. Then again, maybe he just had a big old dose of common sense, something which seems to be missing from the scientific community at large.
