Destiny: Liberation

Psalm 139

Rolling up my sleeves, determined to spend a little time practicing PhotoShop techniques, I took a look through my Picasa (it’s free! and powerful!) digital photo album, finding a perfect photo – my children taking a break during one of our many blueberry picking adventures this past summer. Perched on a huge granite boulder, relaxing with our poodle, our always-thinking 8-year-old Little Professor said, “Mommy, isn’t this a granite rock and don’t they spew radon into the air? Should we breathe or not?” “Spew” and “radon” all in the same sentence, but then again, he was right. We spent the remainder of the day picking blueberries, discussing the periodic table of elements of the amazing natural beauty all around us. For most of the major ones we named – oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, sodium, magnesium, manganese – Daniel reminded his older sister and me that human beings (and our poodle) were all made from the same elements and, here’s the most important part, that “matter never dies” – a valuable piece of information learned from an Einstein documentary.

Job 15 All flesh (basar) shall perish together and man shall turn again unto dust (aphar). (Strongs)

Sooner or later, really smart children, like my son, want to apply the information they’re learning on a personal level. Talking about elements that never die, soon turns to questions like, “What happens when we die.” He’s a smart little boy, not content to stay in the realm of elementary-level boardbooks, so for real answers that have meaning and bear witness to Truth, we turn to the Bible.

Romans 8:21-23 teaches a physical resurrection. Paul teaches that we are waiting for “the redemption of our bodies” (Rom 8:23). Our bodies are not going to be thrown away. They are going to be renewed, restored, revitalized. How glorious! The Great Christian Doctrine of the Resurrection of the Body

When we die, our bodies will return to the ground from which they were created. Our spirits will return to our Creator, where they will wait for Glorification, where an all-powerful Creator of the entire universe, will set all of creation free of decay and corruption.

As John Piper has said, “The creation is not destined for annihilation. It is destined for liberation.” Thus, the physical creation will last forever—in its renewed state. Since our bodies are part of creation, we must conclude that they also will be transformed and yet remain physical. The Great Christian Doctrine of the Resurrection of the Body

All creation will be recreated, renewed, with an all-powerful, all-loving God fully able beyond our narrow, myopic finite minds, to restore everything for His own good purpose, never losing a single molecule, no matter how far the wind or waters may have carried it (1 Corinthians 15:51-52) so that it all would declare His glory. (Psalm 19:1)

“The human body is made up of materials and minerals found on the surface of the ground, and not from the core of the earth. Oxygen, being the most abundant element on the earth’s crust or on the ground, makes up 65 percent of the human body, and carbon, also abundant on the top soil of the ground, is 18 percent, and hydrogen is 10 percent. The 59 elements found in the human body are all found on the earths crust. This is amazing because what the Bible says perfectly match the scientific composition of a human body.” From Dust to Man

The periodic table and Einstein bridged the knowledge gap, helping my son to understand the resurrection of Christ, and in that, our future resurrection. In this, our Christmas season, we give thanks.

“…this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality…then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.” [1 Cor. 15:53-54].
